Natural Resources
From Mother Nature to Your Body & Soul
Indian Springs Calistoga is unique among Calistoga hot springs resorts. All the natural elements found in our pool and Spa treatments come entirely from our own land. Four on-site thermal geysers supply a constant stream of mineral water, plus a substantial deposit of pure volcanic ash runs through the property. Water and ash are combined to create the mud in our famous mud baths, and the water itself is fed directly into our mineral pool, steam rooms and Buddha Pond.
The Waters
Our thermal water supply was created millions of years ago, and its special qualities bring many guests back. Calistoga sits above a fractured plate where magma comes in contact with subterranean waters at a depth of 4,000 feet. These waters become superheated, forcing them through ancient seabeds until they reach the earth’s surface, escaping at 230 degrees Fahrenheit in the form of four geysers. Very few sites in the country have access to such a bountiful source of thermal water, and our guests can soak up its benefits year-round.
Volcanic Ash AKA “The Mud”
Ash, along with mineral water, is one of the two exclusive ingredients in our mud baths. The ash was deposited on our land thousands of years ago when nearby Mt. Konocti and Mt. Lincoln, the little hill on our site, both erupted. These two volcanic events left a 10- to 15-foot vein of volcanic ash on the property.
We mine the ash, taking the time to carefully hand-sift it before mixing in mineral water to create the mud for our Classic Mud Baths. Indian Springs Calistoga is unique among spas for using only 100% pure volcanic ash in our mud baths.
